A non-profit public service organization, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on the campus of Howard University on January 13, 1913 by twenty-two women committed to educational, developmental and community service. The continuing this tread of the organization's public service program is its Five Point Programmatic Thrust focusing on Educational Development, Economic Development, Political Awareness and Involvement, International Awareness, and Physical and Mental Health. Sadie T. Alexander was chosen as the Sorority's first President to guide the development of the newly established organizations.
Today, the sorority continues to follow the defined precepts of its Founders as its membership has grown to over 250,000 women representing over a thousand chapters worldwide.
